Welcome

I’m Sam Steppe (my pen name… or alter ego even?).

I make things — mostly with words, for now. Something in me is always noticing, always turning things over while looking at the world and experiencing my version of this human life we have. Then things come… as thoughts, or feelings I can’t quite name, and every so often they find their way into words. That way of seeing things has been with me a long time. It just took this project to finally have somewhere to put it. I’ve spent a lot of my life feeling like the only one thinking a certain way, but increasingly I’ve come to realize that a lot of people are thinking and feeling along the same lines. But we need connection. That’s most of what I’m after here: the chance that something I put out finds someone else.

Every now and then I get on my motorcycle and disappear into Eastern Europe and the Balkans for a couple of months, alone. A lot of what ends up here comes out of those stretches, one way or another.

I like to put distance between myself and things, both physically and mentally. It allows for at least some clarity sometimes. It also occasionally allows me to see the craziness of our world from a bird’s-eye view. This releases me from the weight — absurdity even — of living in this world, if usually only for a moment. And allows for laughter even.

Such is life.
